Smart Lock or Keypad Not Working? What to Do
By Right Choice Locksmith · October 2026
Smart locks and keypad deadbolts are convenient right up until a code stops working or the lock goes quiet. Most problems come down to a handful of causes, and many can be sorted out in a few minutes. Here's how to work through them, and when it makes sense to call a locksmith.
Start With the Batteries
Weak or dead batteries are the most common reason a keypad lock stops responding. Many locks give a warning first, such as a flashing light, a beep pattern or an app notification, so don't ignore it. Replace all the batteries at once, with the type your manufacturer specifies.
Locked out because the batteries died? Before calling anyone, check for these backups:
- A hidden key cylinder. Many smart locks still have a regular keyhole, sometimes under a sliding cover or behind the logo plate.
- Emergency battery contacts. Many keypad models have two contacts on the outside where you can hold a 9-volt battery to wake the keypad up, then enter your code. Your lock's manual will say whether yours has them and where they are.
- The app. Depending on the model, the app may still be able to unlock the door when the keypad is too weak to light up.
When the Code Stops Working
- Enter the code slowly. Some keypads also need you to press a lock or check button before or after the code.
- Check the app or your account: codes can be deleted, changed or set to expire, especially guest codes.
- Many locks pause the keypad for a while after several wrong attempts. Wait a few minutes and try again.
- If no code works but the keypad lights up, the lock may need to be reset. Follow the manufacturer's reset steps, and note that a reset usually erases every code.
App, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Problems
If the lock works from the keypad but not from your phone, check that Bluetooth is on, the app is up to date and any hub or bridge is plugged in. A new router or Wi-Fi password is a common reason Wi-Fi locks drop offline, and the fix is reconnecting the lock in the app.
In apartment buildings, the lock may be managed by the property through a building system such as Latch. If that's the case, contact management first: they may be able to restore access remotely, and they usually need to approve any lock changes.
When It's Mechanical, Not Electronic
If you hear the motor run but the bolt doesn't move, or it stops partway, the problem is often the door, not the electronics. Doors shift over time, and a bolt that rubs against the strike plate can jam a motorized lock. Try pulling or pushing the door slightly while it locks. If that helps, the strike plate or door alignment needs adjusting.

- You're locked out and none of the backup options work.
- The bolt drags, jams or only partly extends.
- The lock is physically damaged, or the keypad has stopped working entirely.
- You want to replace a smart lock that keeps failing, or switch back to a traditional deadbolt.
- You just moved into a home with a smart lock. Reset the codes and rekey the backup key cylinder so previous owners can't get in.
